Section 3: Learner Development

As educators function in the role of Learner Development, the surest path to empowerment (accompanied by increased organizational effectiveness, faculty excellence and improved student learning outcomes) is through the growth of learning skills and processes. Chapter 3.1, Establishing Quality Learning Environments, examines the environment where the growth of learning skills and processes takes place, paying special attention to how environments which encourage and stimulate this growth are created. Chapter 3.2, Facilitating Learning, introduces the concept of facilitation, whereby educators, through positive interaction with learners and the application of a variety of tools and techniques, can help to increase the growth of learner skills and processes. Chapter 3.3, Effective Teaching Practices, moves from the role and behavior of the educator, to actual classroom practices that encourage learners to develop and grow. Chapter 3.4, Effective Learning Tools, provides a twist on this perspective; just as tools can help make teaching more effective, so there are other tools that can make the practice of learning more effective.
