Process Education is a performance-based philosophy of education which integrates many different educational theories, processes, and tools in emphasizing the continuous development of learning skills through the use of assessment principles in order to produce learner self-development.

We offer this as our definition of Process Education™ — it is what we believe and what we strive to communicate and practice. We’d like to draw your attention to the clause, "which integrates many different educational theories," as it is our intention to begin highlighting and sharing some of those theories, as well as the thinking and thinkers behind them.

The phrase, standing on the shoulders of giants, is attributable to Bernard De Chartres, a 12th century philosopher and scholar. Chartres is reported to have said that the scholars of his day were like dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants, and so able to see farther than the ancients (as cited in John of Salisbury’s Metalogicon).

We believe that we do see farther and so, like Bernard De Chartres, we wish to acknowledge those giants upon whose shoulders we stand. Chartres is the first (but not earliest) theorist and thinker we salute, as his phrase resonates culturally and offers us the perfect language for our purpose.
