Pacific Crest has another member in our successful series of POGIL workbooks with the release of Foundations of Chemistry, 4th edition, by Dave Hanson. These 66 activities, enough to easily cover a two-semester general chemistry course, will actively engage your students in process-oriented guided-inquiry learning (POGIL) and assist them in becoming better critical thinkers and problem-solvers. Foundations of Chemistry, 4th Edition, is also the most reasonably priced activity book for general chemistry on the market today.

We surveyed the experiences of instructors and students alike and found a real desire for greater focus on concepts of primary significance such as Units of Measurement and the Periodic Table. Thanks to the cooperative effort of several instructors, the resulting workbook, with 18 new activities, offers a comprehensive set of materials covering two semesters of general chemistry.

In addition to a focus on chemistry which moves beyond the concept of course work to take advantage of real-world problems and contexts, the design of Foundations of Chemistry encourages information processing, critical and analytical thinking, problem-solving, oral and written communication, teamwork, and metacognition (reflection on learning, self-assessment, self-management, and self-regulation). The POGIL method engages students in the learning process, helping them to master the material through conceptual understanding rather than by memorization and pattern-matching. Students are encouraged to work in small groups and solve problems as they discover the concepts of chemistry themselves.

The  website contains a “flipbook” preview of the workbook. In addition, there is a secure Instructor Resources website that includes access to all activities, answers to the key questions and exercises, and links to additional information on the POGIL method and problem-solving with chemistry.
