Learning and Applying a New Methodology
WHY
A methodology is a model of an experts’ perspective of the essence of a process. The most effective
transfer of a professionals’ expertise is through methodologies. A self-grower builds expertise by learning
to analyze process knowledge through applying and assessing performance with the methodology.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES This learning activity will teach you to:
1. Analyze each step for purpose, function & contribution to the quality of the whole
2. Parse the methodology into three stages: steps required to prepare for the process; steps to carry out
the process; steps for quality control and assuring process effectiveness
3. Learn to analyze the methodology through a familiar context
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA If you successfully complete this activity, you will be able to:
Successfully apply a new methodology to a novel context
• Accurate or useful identification and division of steps
• Awareness of assumptions
• Awareness of process (identification of potential for improving the application of the methodology
through assessment and use of rubrics)
PLAN
1. Working in your groups, review the problem scenarios (Models).
2. Select one on which your team will focus.
3. Apply the Problem Solving Methodology in order to solve the problem. Use a Problem Solving
Methodology worksheet.
4. Once you have solved the problem, assess your team’s use of the Problem Solving Methodology. Use
the Assessing Problem Solving worksheet.
5. Answer the Critical Thinking Questions.
