“Reading without reflecting is like eating without digesting.”
—
Edmund Burke
“From every book invisible threads reach out to other books; and as the mind comes
to use and control those threads the whole panorama of the world’s life, past and
present, becomes constantly more varied and interesting, while at the same time the
mind’s own powers of reflection and judgment are exercised and strengthened.”
—Helen E. Haines

EFLECTION
In this experience, you will use a
Reading Log
as a way to begin to reflect on how you practice and per-
form as a reader—one of the key skills for a self-grower.
P
URPOSE
Reading is one of the primary markers of
literacy
, the ability to read for knowledge and interest, write
coherently, and think critically about the written word. There is direct correlation between literacy levels
and socioeconomic standing; the more literate a people, the more likely they are to be able to educate
themselves, improve their employment prospects, and make better-informed choices in every respect.
For this reason, reading is one of the most critical skills for a self-grower—once you are a competent and
critical reader, the world including its knowledge and history is yours for the taking.
