Buffalo State College will host a three-day institute focusing on issues pertaining to the mathematical preparation and quantitative competencies of students. This institute is sponsored by the Buffalo State Title III Grant Project. Institute Outcomes • Measure student math preparation and discuss related placement issues.• Produce a consensus set of quantitative reasoning competencies to be acquired through self-directed learning as well as quantitative reasoning competencies normally achieved in general education programs. • Review the research and best practices associated with the teaching and learning of mathematics. • Explore and rank the key skills related to the learning of mathematics. • Advance the practice of math preparation (for math-intensive courses) in a self-directed environment. Agenda Items • Writing measurable learning outcomes• Discussion of why students are not prepared for math-intensive courses• How to generalize the learning process so that transference happens• The difference between reviewing content and new learning material• The role of critical thinking; understanding versus memorizing• Inventorying mathematical competencies; what we want students to be able to perform• Designing a quality learning module; including writing critical thinking and inquiry questions• Assessing student learning and tools for measuring learning• Discussion of quality learning systems (including on-line environments)
