Buffalo State College will host a three-day institute focusing on issues pertaining to the mathematical preparation and quantitative competencies of students. This institute is sponsored by the Buffalo State Title III Grant Project.

Institute Outcomes

Measure student math preparation and discuss related placement issues.

Produce a consensus set of quantitative reasoning competencies to be acquired through self-directed learning as well as quantitative reasoning competencies normally achieved in general education programs.

Review the research and best practices associated with the teaching and learning of mathematics.

Explore and rank the key skills related to the learning of mathematics.

Advance the practice of math preparation (for math-intensive courses) in a self-directed environment.

Writing measurable learning outcomes

Discussion of why students are not prepared for math-intensive courses

How to generalize the learning process so that transference happens

The difference between reviewing content and new learning material

The role of critical thinking; understanding versus memorizing

Inventorying mathematical competencies; what we want students to be able to perform

Designing a quality learning module; including writing critical thinking and inquiry questions

Assessing student learning and tools for measuring learning

Discussion of quality learning systems (including on-line environments)

Title III will sponsor a follow-up in-house workshop, half days on May 15 and 16, to continue our discussion of these issues in the context of Buffalo State.
