3 Define expectations
(yours and the audience’s)
I will give a 12 to 15 minute speech to the incoming freshman class, during orientation week.
The topic of my speech will be the challenges I experienced in my first year of college.
I am a student with a full year of college behind me.
preparing, rehearsing, organizing a message, sharing knowledge
I need to know my audience and their expectations and remember experiences
from my first year of college.
Sharing personal experiences with fellow students
I’m nervous about speaking in public.
I’m not very tall and the podium is good-sized. I will need to make sure there’s a
step or block for me to stand on so that I can see everyone & they can see me.
I will take 12 to 15 minutes and deliver an interesting speech that gives my audience some
potentially useful information to think about that might be able to help them as they face the
challenges of their first year of college.
My expectations are that I will get through this, not make any major mistakes, come across
as someone just like them, and maybe through sharing my experiences, help someone
else. Their expectations are probably to be minimally entertained in the time between their
orientation to student services and lunch. If they are like I was, they’ll be more interested to
hear from students than from professors when it comes to what college is like for students.
