The number of mobile phones in the United States has increased enormously since
the approval of the Advanced Mobile Phone System by the FCC in 1982 when
there were fewer than 50,000 mobile phone users. By the year 2000, there were
110 million mobile phone users in the United States. Use has steadily increased
since then, and the number of users reached 270 million in 2008. In 2008, more
than three-quarters of the population of the United States had a mobile phone.
