Solving problems in your life
Have some fun with word problems. Find sample word problems on the internet that are fun,
challenging, and relevant to you. Instead of solving them, just interpret the word problems to see if
you can make sense of them. Do this for five of these word problems you find.
In your other courses look for typical problems at the back of the chapter or book that offer additional
challenges. Do the same thing with these: Set up the problem to see if you can interpret them.
Identify any issues in the setup of the problem and modify your list of tips to address these issues.
Pick three areas in your life (maybe triggered by your classmates examples) and now frame each as
a world problem. Use the methodology you’ve learned here to help you solve these problems.

Reflecting on and appreciating your learning
1. What kind of thinking do you do when considering a world problem but before you begin to solve
it?
2. In taking a quantitative reasoning type of test, why is it important to stop and think about what the
question is asking, what format the answer should be in, and what other information in the question
or on the entire test leads you to define or interpret the question more clearly?
3. In mathematical reasoning, which is more important: Asking/interpreting questions or Solving a
problem? Why?
