between the data needs to be standardized or normalized so that the comparison of
the data is based upon comparable units. For example, when the dollar (the unit) is
adjusted for inflation (purchasing power), the median household income of $41,262
in 2000 converts to $55,987 in 2012 purchasing dollars which is now greater than
$51,017. When connecting data across multiple sources, or multiple years, in this case,
it is very important to get the data in the same units, and it often needs a conversion
to get the data on the same scales.
