The music library on my laptop has been evolving over the last 10 years. I have built my library from
cassettes I purchased more than 15 years ago and converted to digital format, CDs that I purchased and
stored on my machine, recordings I made of my own jazz quartet performing, and all different kinds
of music from local events, especially school concerts. I have organized my music on my laptop by
category: classical orchestral, classical chamber, classical soloists, jazz, rock and roll, punk rock, hip
hop, country and western, and other. The data I stored for each song is: date performed or placed on the
system, length (in minutes:seconds), song name, and performer name. Recently, the Recording Industry
Association of America (RIAA) sent a letter accusing me of copyright infringement (probably because
our local paper ran a story on me having the largest personal music library in a 4-state region). What did
I do wrong or fail to do?

Reflecting on and appreciating your learning
1. Quantitative reasoning builds a behavior of doing: attacking a problem, finding out something,
seeking understanding, or building a new model or system. Therefore, how often should we stop,
step back, and reflect on why are we doing this?
2. Why do we use concrete examples to help abstract and generalize knowledge when it comes to
quantitative reasoning and problem solving?
3. Effective problem solving is making sure that a problem solution holds up over time and can be
reused in future problem situations. Why is it important to think ahead and explore future potential
challenges, constraints, or additional situations beyond the current situation when solving a problem?
4. How do we use what we have already learned when it comes to learning something new? Where,
how, and to what extent did you do that with this activity on Organizing Data?
