Step
Explanation (What happened and what I will do)
State clear outcomes
I will get at least 90% on the final; I will validate all my work; I will generalize
each concept
Develop a plan
1) I will develop a way to validate all problem solutions to reduce errors (If I
don’t validate it, it isn’t finished)
2) I will work with my group and help my own understanding by demonstrating
for them how the problems should be solved and validated
3) I will practice generalizing in my homework by creating the hardest problem
I can of each kind of problem I learn to solve, and solving that problem
4) I will offer these “hardest problems” to my group and study group to
challenge them and ask them to challenge me
Perform to the plan
I have talked to my study group about my plan, and they all agreed. We will
meet weekly, each of us will “teach” the rest of us on new problem types, and
we’ll all challenge each other with “hardest problems”
Assess performance
At the end of each week, I will perform an SII Self-Assessment on the practices
of generalization and validation, so I can continue to improve
Adjust the plan
I will determine if I need to make changes in the study team, hours committed,
or what I do to achieve my outcomes
Appreciate gains
I will document my learning in validation and generalization by listing at least
one new discovery about both validation and generalization each week
Reward achievement
After the final, the team will go out to celebrate how much we learned and
improved

Working in teams:
1.
Share insights from your exploratory exercises by describing how significant “failures” became
growth experiences.
2.
Share insights from your exploratory exercises concerning failures that are still bothering you and
the reasons why.
Working individually:
3.
Answer the Critical Thinking Questions
4.
Spend at least 10 minutes completing a concept map that includes the following concepts:
assessment, failure, mentor, risk-taking, self-growth,
and
success
. Include a minimum of 10 other
terms from the reading as well as five key learning skills. Use the blank Concept Map included in
this part of the experience.
