Growing from Failure: My College Algebra Course Mid-Term Exam
I was a very successful high school math student and consistently got A’s and B’s in all my math classes.
I was doing all the homework, attending class and was successful in the short quizzes during class. Thus
I was shocked when I got a 58% on the mid-term exam.
Step
Explanation (What happened and what I will do)
Recognize the need for
change and growth
My exam score will not help me get a "B" in this course
Explore contextual issues
I analyze my test performance and discovered that 20% of my mistakes were
careless errors, 25% were because I wasn’t able to transfer what I knew from
the problems I learned with (in the book) to new and different problems.
Prioritize based on values
I want to be a STEM major (biology) and I must get at least a B in this class,
but I also want to feel successful as a student
