IJPE (International
Journal of Process Education)
We on the editorial board are very pleased
to share with you our ongoing journey to improve higher education
through continuous improvement. This year we have continued to practice
what we preach, directing significant focused effort to improve our
internal processes. It has been a pleasure to take the concepts we
developed during our work in producing the journal's inaugural edition,
to developing, over the past year, sustainable processes as we prepare
to increase our distribution. The topics covered in the edition cover
program design and implementation of existing PE tools as well as both
learning and program assessment. The journal is available in electronic
format on the
IJPE website.
We hope that you enjoy the articles and since it is part of our
philosophy that our journal can be improved by stakeholder assessment,
we welcome your comments and feedback.
Now is also the time that we begin the
Call for Abstracts for our next editorial cycle. Full papers will be due
December 1, 2010. To make a submission please visit the
IJPE website
for details.
Process Education Conference 2010: A Success!
The 2010 Process Education Conference, "Preparing Today's
Students to Solve Tomorrow's Problems," was held at St. Louis
College of Pharmacy. Following a special pre-conference workshop
on Learning to Learn camps, conference participants were
welcomed on Sunday evening with a highly-interactive poster
session called the Hall of Innovation. Each presenter briefly
summarized for the group the items they had brought to share,
and then people began to mingle and discuss the many innovations
on display. The Hall of Innovation was immediately followed by
an interactive book review which included a discussion of how
Process Education principles relate to L. Dee Fink's recent text
on course design.
The interactive nature of the conference activities on the first
day continued through Monday and Tuesday. Plenary speakers Larry
Michaelson, Don Saari, and Dan Apple kept conference
participants engaged as they demonstrated ways to engage
students in Team-Based Learning, fascinate students with problem
solving in mathematics, and utilize the Problem Solving
Methodology in real-time with a stakeholder group, respectively.
Each of the plenary speakers emphasized the importance of
applying concepts using realistic scenarios when facilitating
activities to develop student skills in problem solving. What's
more, this year, each of the plenary speakers offered
additional sessions where participants were able to delve
more deeply into the techniques presented.

Conference workshop
and paper dialogue session highlights in 2010 included sessions
related to problem solving such as the use of
Problem-Based-Learning in physiology, solving real problems in
chemistry, and using an analytic rubric for problem solving in
STEM fields. Other sessions included topics such as student
success, ecological leadership, validating a writing rubric,
using classrooms for Process Education research, designing
instruction for all students including those with disabilities,
and issues arising when implementing process education
collaboratively across disciplines.
Social interaction,
always a priority at PE conferences, was also robust. Nearly
everyone shared meals together at lunch each day, and also at
the conference dinner at Hannegan's restaurant in the historic
downtown area of St. Louis. Many conference participants were
also able to enjoy each other's company and informally network
as they sampled the local spirits and environs, traveled to the
top of the famous St. Louis Arch, or dined together after the
close of the conference.
