Not planning ahead for accessing the data in the future
Example
: The health records of one hospital that focused on cancer treatments collected data
associated with that type of treatments. Another hospital is now treating that patient
for cardiac major intervention, but needs this data. The structure and organization
of the treatment data doesn’t permit the transfer and accessibility to the new cardiac
hospital that meets their needs.
Why?
The ability to provide efficient and effective medical care is based upon doing
effective diagnosis of a particular medical issue. When a patient has more than one
major medical issue requiring the involvement of multiple hospitals, sharing of data
is a must. Thus the organization of the data in a hospital data system must be designed
for efficient electronic transfer to other hospital data systems.
●
Not organizing the structure of the data for its primary uses
Example
: A phone book that lists organizations alphabetically (white pages), when its use is
primarily business-to-business commerce (yellow pages).
Why?
The business-to-business is about organizing around function or service so you can
quickly determine your options for a type of service.

How to complete the activity
1. Select three different data sets to work with, each of which has been collected in a different way. If
possible, select data sets you have not previously worked with.
2. Analyze the Methodology for Organizing Data using these three data sets.
3. Answer the Critical Thinking Questions using the three data sets you have chosen.
4. With this increased understanding, now organize one of these three data sets using the Methodology
for Organizing Data.
5. Complete the remainder of this activity (from Demonstrate Your Understanding through Assessing
Your Performance) on your own, or as directed by your instructor.
