3. In planning a dinner party for 12 close friends, what food can be on the menu? Determine how you
would go about resolving this, considering things such as allergies, vegetarianism, and so on.
4. You are traveling to visit your Granddad for his 80th birthday. He lives 2,000 miles away and you
have decided to fly there, rather than drive. You have five days available but absolutely need to be
there on Mar 15
th
(his actual birthday). Model this situation with set theory.
5.
Consider the following Venn diagrams. What do they demonstrate?
a.
All cards
Aces
Jacks
b.
All cards
Aces
Hearts
6. Use a Venn diagram to demonstrate the relationship between the universal set of numbers, positive
numbers, negative numbers, zero, and integers.

ardest Problem
How hard
can
it be? Can you still use what you’ve learned?
Based on the Model, the information, and the Demonstrate Your Understanding (DYU) problems in this
activity, create the
hardest
problem you can. Start with the hardest DYU problem in this experience
and by contrasting and comparing it with the other DYU problems, play “What if” with the different
conditions and parameters in the various problems.
Can you still solve the problem? If so, solve it. If not, explain why not. What is it that makes a problem
involving basic set theory a difficult problem to solve?
What are the conditions and parameters that make a problem involving basic set theory a difficult
problem to solve?

The following is an excerpt from the Heritage Foundation website:
In 2007, The Heritage Foundation became the first and only organization to track thwarted
terrorist attacks against the United States. That year, Heritage reported that at least 19 publicly
known terrorist attacks against the United States had been foiled since 9/11. Today, that number
stands at 50. The fact that the United States has not suffered a large-scale attack since 9/11
speaks to the country’s counterterrorism successes. But, one year after the death of Osama bin
Laden, the long war on terrorism is far from over. Reviewing the terrorist plots that have been
foiled since 9/11 can provide valuable information for understanding the nature of the threat,
as well as best practices for preventing the next attack. The U.S. must also be ready to adapt its
security strategies—such as to counter terror attacks by an increasing number of homegrown
terrorists.

There’s a lot to unpack here. As a way to begin to understand the essay and the points being made, create
a Venn diagram that represents each of the following sets (given below) and their relationships to one
another, as expressed in the excerpt. Define any areas of overlap in your diagram.
