Using a Software Help System
Learning skills: inquiring, clarifying expectations, and exploring context
WHY
Since software packages change frequently and new software is always available, using a help system is
a valuable skill. In this activity, you will explore a help system of your choice.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Gain more proficiency in using a help system.
2. Practice explaining a tool to another student.
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
Criterion #1: your understanding of the components of a software help system
Attributes:
a. can use two more parts of the software package than before using the help system
b. can identify the parts of the help system
Criterion #2: ability to teach a tool to another
Attribute:
your partner is able to explain two new aspects of the software being investigated, based upon what
you’ve taught them
PLAN
1. Choose a software help system (possible choices include: Microsoft® Word, Excel, PowerPoint, your
Internet browser, Adobe® Reader, etc.).
2. Investigate the help system, using the Critical Thinking Questions.
3. Demonstrate the help system to your partner.
4. Ask your partner to then explain at least two features they learned about back to you.
5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 with your partner teaching you.
