ACTIVITY 10.1

                              Academic Honesty

                                Learning skills: recording, managing resources, attending

WHY

Colleges have academic codes or policies which prohibit cheating, plagiarism and other forms of
intellectually dishonest behavior.Agreat deal of learning and writing done in college involves the collection,
assessment, and processing of ideas and material originally conceived by others. When you document
these ideas correctly, and add your own analysis, you are becoming part of a larger academic discussion. If
you plagiarize others’ work, you are only learning to “cut and paste,” not to grow intellectually. Therefore,
it is crucial to understand the difference between using a source to help you learn, versus reproducing
another person’s work as if it were your own. Adhering to your college’s academic honesty policies and
maintaining your reputation and integrity are always in your best interest. And now that most colleges
have access to plagiarism-detection programs, it’s just plan smart to do your own work.

   LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Learn about your school’s policies concerning academic honesty.

2. Share opinions about issues related to academic honesty.

   PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Criterion #1: preparedness for class
    Attributes:
    a. all assigned reading has been completed
    b. all Critical Thinking Questions have been answered

Criterion #2: participation in possible class discussion
    Attributes:
    a. at least two contributions are made to class discussion
    b. a meaningful discovery or insight is shared

PLAN

1. Read the section in your college handbook or on your college web site on academic honesty.

2. Read the information in Chapter 10 about academic honesty.

3. Before coming to class, answer the Critical Thinking Questions in preparation for a possible class
    discussion about academic honesty.
