P. 156
You actually met Rene in back in Chapter 1. Rene is con-
sidering information technology (IT) as a possible major
and career. He loves anything related to computers. He’s
not so sure about economics and is really struggling
with that course this year. He freely admits to being
a bit of a nerd, but likes being the person others go
to when they need help with anything related to
technology. Not only does he have a real aptitude for
“tech stuff,” he’s also great at teaching other people
how to use it. Rene hangs out with other students
interested in IT. He’ll work with them even more as
he expands on his life vision.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this chapter, you should be able to:
• Converse with an experienced student using standard college terminology
• Identify possible majors, having considered several career options and performed research regarding
what majors might fit those paths
• Have a deeper understanding of a chosen field and what background is needed in order to succeed
in that field from interviews with some experts
READING
The Terminology of College
In Chapter 2, you engaged in some exploration of your college environment. Through this and just by day-
to-day experiences, you’ve probably already found out that college life abounds with new words and familiar
words used in strange ways. Have you figured out matriculation yet? What about general education?
Since each student in your class has probably already mastered some of the terminology, Activity 6.1 will
give you an opportunity to pool your knowledge and then test others.
