Finding Out More About My Field of Interest
In the last Critical Reflection, you identified two possible fields of interest. Of those two, select one as a
potential career path, for the purposes of the exercises and activities in this chapter.
Whatever potential career path you’ve identified, an important part exploring that path is research. We
encourage you to research books, journals, and the Internet to find out more about your field of interest
and what kind of educational background is required to enter that field. People who work in your potential
field are also an excellent resource as you continue your exploratory phase. The next exercise will help
you begin that exploration.
LIFE VISION PORTFOLIO
Interviews
Find two people to interview about your field of interest. A role model or mentor is an ideal person to
interview. If you do not have one, a faculty member in your field of interest is a good person to approach for
an interview. Another good choice is to interview someone who is employed in your field of interest. Before
you meet with each person, (whether in person, by phone, or e-mail) complete the following information:
Name of person you’re interviewing: _______________________________
Occupation: _________________________________________________
Why did I select this person? _____________________________________
________________________________________________________________
Ask this person the following questions and write out his or her responses. Put the answers in your Life
Vision Portfolio.
1. Why did you select this kind of work?
2. What do you like best about your job?
3. What do you like least about your job?
4. If you could have any job you wanted, would it be this one? If not, describe your ideal job.
5. What kind of preparation would you recommend for someone interested in a job like yours?
