Here is a sample methodology for closing out a register:
BEGIN
Step 1 Think through the skills and materials you need in order to close a register. You need to be able
to count, for example. And, you may need a code that allows you access to the register—be
sure to have it before you start.
Step 2 Open the register and begin counting the bills. Count large bills from underneath, then twenties,
then tens, then fives, then ones. Write your totals on a piece of paper or enter into a calculator.
Step 3 Count your change. You may need to wrap up coins. Add to your totals.
Step 4 Add to find the total amount of cash in your drawer.
Step 5 See what the register or a calculation by you (looking at amount
starting with in your drawer plus money collected minus money
given out as change) tells you what you should have in your drawer.
Step 6 Compare the total you have with what the register says you should
have.
Step 7 If the totals compare, you’re ready to go home. If not, return to Step 2.
Step 8 Once done, confirm with your supervisor and see if he or she has any suggestions for improvement.

Do you remember using a “cheat sheet” the first few times you performed a task such as closing out a
register? After practicing a number of times, you became less dependent on needing to carefully follow
the steps—you internalized the process. This is also true of methodologies. Until you become familiar
with a methodology, it is strongly recommended that you closely follow the steps. With practice, you will
internalize the process and the steps will become second nature.
In this book, we’ll be presenting eight different methodologies. They will all have similar components to the
