From the time Abby was a very young girl, she
had definite opinions on everything. Instead of
simply having a favorite color, food, or TV show,
Abby could argue why her choices were the
best. For example, blue was not only the color
of the sky and the lakes, it matched with many
other colors! Early on, Abby’s mom suggested
that Abby become a lawyer, and Abby thinks
her mom may be right. Abby is in her first year
of college now and open to different career
paths. Abby still likes to argue, though, as her
roommates and classmates can attest. She
might start out in the paralegal field and then
see where she goes from there.

Contexts for Writing
Informal Writing
As we discussed with respect to reading in Chapter 3, you probably do much more writing than you realize.
How many text messages or e-mails have you sent today? Have you updated a blog or your social network
entry as well? Although these contexts are quite different from writing a college essay, you are still dealing
with issues of topic, purpose, and audience. Because the audience in these examples is generally someone
