                                The Student Handbook

                                    Learning skills: clarifying expectations, identifying assumptions

   WHY

The Student Handbook contains information specifically written as a guide and resource for students at
your school. A Student Handbook typically includes information about students’ rights and responsibilities,
a school’s policies and procedures, available support services for students, and the specifics about campus
organizations. Knowledge of the information in the handbook enables you to become a more empowered
student who is able to utilize resources and gain the most from your college experience.

   LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Become more knowledgeable about your school and its services through the Student Handbook.
2. Learn new information about your school that will be personally useful.

   PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Criterion #1: the one or two-page “user’s guide” you create
    Attributes:
    a. usefulness
    b. completeness
    c. visual appeal

Criterion #2: the assessment of your school’s Student Handbook

    Attributes:
    a. includes at least three strengths with reasons for why they are strengths
    b. includes at least three areas for improvement with explanations as to how the improvements could

         be made

PLAN

1. Obtain a copy of the Student Handbook from your school.                        165
2. Skim through the entire handbook to obtain an overview of the contents.
3. Answer the Critical Thinking Questions.
4. Complete the Project portion of this activity.
5. Use the SII Assessment form in this activity to assess your Student Handbook.
